Ian William's Match Report Vs Dunkirk
East Midlands Counties League 6th February 2010
DUNKIRK FC........................ 3 (Westcarr 2, Soar)
GEDLING MW..................... 3 (Walton, Boulton, Payne)
Captain Marvel does it again....
A ding-dong, see-saw battle of a local derby saw Dunkirk and Gedling MW share the points in a six goal thriller.
The home side went ahead in the 11th minute through Jarrod Westcarr who slid the ball beneath Lance Walker after an under hit defensive back pass. The lead could have been doubled within 5 minutes when Lee Day fired just over with Walker beaten. Gedling slowly began to get back into the game and Warren Hatfield went mighty close after 25 minutes with a fine effort. Chances were few and between in a game that was becoming in danger of being bogged down in midfield. The home side threatened to add to their lead approaching half time with Anthony Gregory almost doubling his sides lead. A minute from the break, the Miners were level. A first corner from the right taken by Craig Boulton was desperately cleared away for another one and from this the ball was zipped to the near post area where defender Grant Walton was on hand to slot home the equaliser.
Both sides started the second period brightly, but with no goals although Day and Darren Garmston went close for the home team and Hatfield and Clarke were beginning to find their shooting boots with good attempts. 61 minutes saw the first serious effort as a Garmston effort rebounded back off the post, into play and cleared. Both ‘keepers were called into serious action to keep their sides level, Ivanov stopping Chris Hall’s shot and, at the other end, a wonder tip over from Walker from a screamer from Day. In the 70th minute, the visitors nudged ahead. A great run and cross from the left by Shaun Clarke saw his low cross converted smartly by Craig Boulton. With a quarter of an hour to play came a crazy 2 minutes when Dunkirk not only cut the deficit, but went ahead. First Duane Soar rose highest and unchallenged to plant the ball home with a header from a left wing corner, and shortly afterwards, Westcarr managing to fine time and space in a crowded box to sweep in the go-ahead goal. Dunkirk smelled blood now and Walker again had to be at his sharpest, punching away a good effort from Garmston.
Far from being down and out, Gedling pushed forward for the equaliser and Hatfield was unfortunate to see his shot somehow cleared off the line to safety. Defeat was staring the team in the face until the last of minutes. Mr Dallison, who had what one could call an average game, awarded a free kick to the visitors some 25 yards pout on the left. Clarke’s cross was inch perfect and Barry Payne, for the second match in 4 days popped up at the far post with a smart header to rescue a point.
An uninspiring, but gritty performance, but a point gained at Lenton Lane extends the Miners unbeaten run to eight. In a game of barely little football, but bags of effort, the points were shared in a game that no side really deserved to lose. Not for the first time this season, the team dug out a performance which sums up the guts and determination that is apparent in the camp.
